WEDNESDAY, March 30th, 2011 out-like-lambs' birthdays

Clapton_is_god2 March 30th inspires another birthday honoree play list. MC Hammer and Celine Dion both celebrate a birthday today. They are not our birthday honorees. They do happen to share a birthday with Eric Clapton, Tracy Chapman, and Norah Jones. Not a bad bunch of birthdays at the tail end of this month, eh? Here are some songs from this talented trio of Aries musicians:

1. Layla - Eric Clapton
Inspired by his then-unrequited love for George Harrison's wife, this love song features amazing guitar work featuring both Clapton and Duane Allman from Derek and the Dominos' first and only studio album.

2. Don't Know Why - Norah Jones
Written by jazz musician Jesse Harris and covered by Jones on her 2002 breakthrough album, Come Away With Me, this song remains Jones' most popular and critically acclaimed so far, although she did just turn 32, so it's reasonable to expect a lot more from her.

3. Talkin 'bout a Revolution - Tracy Chapman
Recently played on a loop in the streets of Tunisia before the events that toppled the dictatorship of Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali unfolded. One more sign that art can change the world.

4. I Shot the Sheriff - Eric Clapton
Clapton's cover of Bob Marley's song was Clapton's only number one hit in the US and brought an increased profile to both musicians.

5. Love Me Tender - Norah Jones
Norah Jones interprets Elvis with such beauty that if Elvis were alive today he would likely be tempted to come out of hiding and sing a duet.

6. Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
Chapman's first hit song that propelled her from busking in Harvard Square and performing in Cambridge coffeehouses to national prominence.

7. Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Eric Clapton
Clapton tries to recreate the success of I Shot The Sheriff by applying a reggae twist to this Dylan hit.

8. Sunrise - Norah Jones
The first single from 2004's Feels Like Home.

9. Change the World - Eric Clapton
Clapton pairs with Babyface on this hit song from the 2006 film Phenomenon.

10. Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman
Chapman's biggest hit, this song reached number three on the US charts in 1995. She hadn't chosen it for inclusion on her first three studio albums despite the fact that she had been performing it for years, including a 1989 appearance on Saturday Night Live.

11. I Shot The Sheriff (Guitar Solo) - Eric Clapton
Clapton can play, and he is putting his credentials on display in this live performance thrown in for the guitar fans out there.

12. Don't Know Why - Norah Jones and Elmo
As if we needed another reason to be charmed by Norah Jones. She hangs out with Elmo and knows The Letter of the Day.
