WEDNESDAY, JULY 28th, 2010play list of the week: a bubbly birthday

champagne August 4th, 2010, Barack Obama's 49th birthday. We were going to do a play list for the 44th president until we discovered August 4th is also the date in 1693 that a Benedictine monk named Dom Perignon is credited with inventing Champagne. No offense, Mr. President, but it's tough to compete with the blend of Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Pinot Meunier that bursts forth from the bottle, effervesces on your tongue, tickles the taste buds as it giddily intoxicates your brain. Although sparkling wine did exist before Perignon, it was the famed monk who made the necessary advances in the procedure to make substantial production viable, and the world has never been the same. Pop a cork and put your bare feet up on the nearest velvet footstool to celebrate like the decadent pre-revolution French Royals. Here's a case of songs about the bubbly and some quotes to deliver while you tip your glasses. Oh, and happy birthday, Mr. President. Cheers:

1. Drinkin' Champagne - Willie Nelson
"I drink champagne when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty." - Madame Lilly Bollinger

2. Champagne Supernova - Oasis
"Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!" - Dom Perignon

3. Rain Champagne - Ann-Margret (from Tommy)
"Three be the things I shall never attain: envy, content, and sufficient Champagne" - Dorothy Parker

4. Champagne & Reefer - Muddy Waters
"I had taken two finger-bowls of Champagne, and the scene had changed before my eyes into something significant, elemental and profound." - F. Scott Fitzgerald

5. Champagne From A Paper Cup - Death Cab for Cutie
"Why do I drink Champagne for breakfast? Doesn't everyone?" - Noel Coward

6. Champagne Taste - Eartha Kitt
"Too much of anything is bad, but too much Champagne is just right." - Mark Twain

7. Champagne - 311
"I drink Champagne when I win, to celebrate…and I drink Champagne when I lose, to console myself." - Napoleon Bonaparte

8. A Glass Of Champagne - Sailor
"There comes a time in every woman's life when the only thing that helps is a glass of Champagne." - Bette Davis

9. No Champagne Socialist - Arkells
"Champagne, if you are seeking the truth, is better than a lie detector. It encourages a man to be expansive, even reckless, while lie detectors are only a challenge to tell lies successfully." - Graham Greene

10. Champagne Life - Ne-Yo
"In a perfect world, everyone would have a glass of Champagne every evening." - Willie Gluckstern

11. Champagne - Sugarcult
"Meeting Franklin Roosevelt was like opening your first bottle of Champagne; knowing him was like drinking it. " - Winston Churchill

12. Tiny Bubbles - Don Ho
"My only regret in life is that I didn't drink enough Champagne." - John Maynard Keynes
