WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26th, 2011 a play list for paul

Obit Paul Newman Paul Newman (born on this day) may be the greatest man who ever lived. We accept that some people may not agree with this sentiment, and we respect that. Nevertheless, we submit: this very handsome and intelligent man had some serious acting chops, which he parlayed into a lucrative career (entertaining & delighting us along the way), from which he created a massively successful philanthropic endeavor that makes the world a better place to this day. If any of you disagree, feel free to name a time and place. We can settle our disagreements the old fashioned way, Cool-Hand-Luke style.

1. Plastic Jesus - Paul Newman
Cool Hand Luke proves he hasn't been broken but leaves the viewer with the eternal question - "How does an inmate in a brutal prison get his hands on a banjo?"

2. Real Gone - Sheryl Crow
Newman's appearance in Pixar's Cars really opened the door to a father's sharing with his daughter about the greatest actor of his generation.

3. Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head - BJ Thomas
The capper to one of the great scenes from one of the best films of all time.

4. Beautiful Man - Mason Jennings
"I don't need to go flying my heterosexual kite. Baby, I don't want his body, I just want to sit and talk all night."

5. The Master's Call - Marty Robbins
A classic song of rebellion, we're not sure it would rest easy with old Paul, but it sure sets up nice next to footage from his films

6. The Distance - Cake
Paul Newman loved a good car race. We're not sure that's what this song is about, but we'll leave that up to you to decide.

7. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Celine Dion
We once laughed when someone asked how long it would be before Celine Dion appeared on our playlist. We laugh no more, although we did hold out for well over a year. Nice tribute, though.

8. Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman
Nice song, nice footage, not Celine Dion. 'Nuff said.

9. Paul Newman's Eyes - Dogs Die In Hot Cars
What more could you ask for than to have an angry indie band pay tribute to your famous peepers?

10. Life is a Highway - Rascal Flatts
Another Cars tune containing advice that Doc would have spun to the young up and comers like Lightning McQueen.

11. Fast Cars - Buzzcocks
Newman's love of autos and fast driving fits in with the narrative of these seminal punkers.

12. Plastic Jesus - Jack Johnson & Mason Jennings
Two ultra cool musicians pay homage to the man.
