WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8TH, 2010 All We Are Saying Is Give Peace A Chance

lennonselfportrait Today is the 30th anniversary of the assassination of John Lennon. Mark David Chapman took the life of one of the most influential musicians in history, a man who envisioned growing old gracefully and continuing to try and make the world a better place with his art. He had hoped to write children's books in his advanced years, saying "I’ve always had that feeling of giving what Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland and Treasure Island gave to me at age seven and eight. Those books opened my whole being.” We hope the generations of people who come of age listening to his songs believe that John did help to open their whole being. Here are some classic Lennon creations paired with some of the things he had to say. Rest in Peace, Mr. Lennon:

1. Norwegian Wood - The Beatles
"Everybody loves you when you're six foot in the ground."

2. Imagine - John Lennon
"Imagine all of us living in peace, it's too beautiful to just be a dream."

3. The Ballad of John and Yoko - The Beatles
"Christ you know it ain't easy. You know how hard it can be. The way things are going, they're gonna crucify me."

4. Instant Karma! - John Lennon
"When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life."

5. All You Need Is Love - The Beatles
"Everything is clearer when you're in love."

6. Nobody Told Me - John Lennon
"I'm not afraid of death because I don't believe in it. It's just getting out of one car, and into another."

7. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - The Beatles
"I believe in everything until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists even if it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now?"

8. Oh Yoko! - John Lennon
"You either get tired fighting for peace, or you die."

9. In My Life - The Beatles
"Guilt for being rich, and guilt thinking that perhaps love and peace isn't enough and you have to go and get shot or something."

10. Give Peace A Chance - John Lennon
"I don't believe in killing whatever the reason!"

11. Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles
"My role in society, or any artist's or poet's role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all."

12. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon
"I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong."
