WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1st, 2010 december, already?

blackfriday Christmas, Christmas, Christmas! Christmas is coming! Did we mention Christmas yet? Black Friday has passed, Small Store Saturday has come and gone, and even Cyber Monday is history. Yesterday was probably Too Late Tuesday. If you haven't gotten your Christmas presents for everyone on your list by now, you might as well give up and go back to bed. While you're there, listen to these songs. They can help to remind you that a lovely month starts today. True, this month happens to host a high profile holiday in the fourth week and ends with another fun one. But those are ages away. Ask any kid. Today is only the first of 31 days of December. Try to enjoy all them all:

1. Bridges And Balloons - The Decemberists
A December play list has to feature the Decemberists, right? Probably more than once.

2. December, 1963 (Oh What A Night) - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
A sweet song about something probably kind of creepy.

3. Danny Says - Tom Waits
Vintage Tom Waits recounting the Ramones bleak view of life on the road.

4. A Long December - Counting Crows
Another doleful song, yes, but with a hint of hope. Adam Duritz and company can all too often slide one tick lower than sorrow, dragging any slightly depressed listener further into misery. At least their ode to the last month of the year makes us look forward to something new in January.

5. December - Basia Bulat
We love Basia Bulat.

6. Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect - The Decemberists
Don't say we didn't warn you.

7. December - Collective Soul
Angsty rock from the mid-nineties.

8. Once Upon a December - Anastasia
Leave it to Disney to romanticize the Russian revolution. In this animated adventure, Anastasia, youngest daughter of the Romanov dynasty, hits her head and loses her memory while escaping from the evil Rasputin (who has cast a curse on her family that essentially sparks the revolution). Hijinks ensue. Bla bla bla. Happy ending.

9. December - Milburn
A rousing number from a little rock band out of Sheffield, England. The lads of Milburn only played from 2002 to 2008, during which time they produced two albums and drummed up quite a following. “December” is a bonus track from their debut album, Well well well, and its subject is decidedly NOT appropriate for the holidays.

10. No Nothing - Randy Kaplan
We're not sure what it is about this song that reminds us of December. Maybe the duck sauce in the fridge, maybe the monkey with attitude. Either way, it makes the list so please enjoy.

11. Little Boxes - The Decemberists
One of our favorite versions of the Weeds theme.

12. Flowers in December – Mazzy Star
Nothing like the soul-crushing melancholy of Mazzy Star to close out a non-holiday play list. Merry December, folks.
