25 Songs For 25 Years

Where were you 25 years ago? June 19, 1990. It was a steamy DC day, and, in the shiny new marble-lined West Hall of Union Station, a little shop rolled open its gleaming glass doors for the first time.

The hit movie of the summer was "Dick Tracy," starring Madonna and Warren Beatty, starting an ill-advised rush for yellow fedoras. (We didn't sell them.) JK Rowling had just begun to write the first Harry Potter book as future Hermione portrayer Emma Watson turned two months old. The checkpoint booth at Checkpoint Charlie was removed from the border between East and West Germany, two weeks before official reunification. Things were happening all over the world.

Twenty-five years later, we are proud and excited -- and, above all, thankful -- to still be going strong. Much has changed over the past quarter century in the world at large, and certainly in the world of retail. (Online shopping? Who'd have thunk of such a possibility in 1990.)

We are going to take you on a stroll through history in the next few months, starting today with a What We Were Listening To In 1990 Play List. Check back with us when you can ... it should be a fun ride.

We’d like to thank all the people who have taken part in this experience over the last twenty five years. Between our great staff and our wonderful customers, we are grateful and honored that you’ve made us a part of your lives. We hope you continue to do so for the next twenty-five years.

1. Ana - The Pixies
“I think everyone should sell whatever product they want to sell for whatever price they want to sell it for, but ultimately the market will dictate what it is and people will have to charge less money for everything. Record companies have been overcharging people for way too long and now this is the trouble that they're in.”
- Frank Black

2. Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor
“When you're young, you don't really know quite what you're aiming at. You're very impulsive and acting on impulse, which is very important and valuable. But you're kind of swimming in a blind sea. When you get older, you have more of a sense of direction.”
- Sinead O'Connor

3. Born At the Right Time - Paul Simon
“Yesterday it was my birthday.
I hung one more year on the line.
I should be depressed.
My life's a mess.
But I'm having a good time.”

- Paul Simon

4. Story of My Life - Social Distortion
“Life goes by so fast, you only want to do what you think is right.
Close your eyes and it's passed - story of my life.”

- Mike Ness

5. No Depression - Uncle Tupelo
“Remember to remember me
Standing still in your past
Floating fast like a hummingbird"

- Jeff Tweedy

6. Fairy Tales – Anita Baker
“Everybody's got opinions
'Bout the way they think our story's gonna end
Some folks feel it's just a superficial thrill
Everybody's gonna have to think again”

- Anita Baker

7. The Sunnyside Of The Street - The Pogues
“I can type with me toes
Suck stout through me nose
And where it's gonna end
God only knows”

- Shane MacGowan

8. Joey - Concrete Blonde
“Things get better every day you stay alive
then I'm amazed
every day
that the sun decides to rise
every minute, every hour, is another
chance to change
life is beautiful & terrible & strange.”

- Johnette Napolitano

9. Fight The Power - Public Enemy
"Real people do real things. A collective of a whole bunch of people who do things in their own locale, in their own neighborhoods - the sum is bigger than the parts, and the parts will grow."
- Chuck D

10. Your Racist Friend - They Might Be Giants
“It wasn't a get rich quick scheme - it's a get rich really really slowly scheme.”
- John Linnell

11. We Didn’t Start The Fire – Billy Joel
“So before we end and then begin
We'll drink a toast to how it's been
A few more hours to be complete
A few more nights on satin sheets
A few more times that I can say
I've loved these days”

- Billy Joel

12. Kinky Afro - Happy Mondays
"I'm getting paid to do what I got in trouble for in the 7th grade. I absolutely love what I do and thank my lucky stars for twenty-five years of full-time employment in this business."
- Rob Paulsen

13. Merchandise - Fugazi
"I'm always happy when I hear about people selling records or selling books or selling movies. It makes me proud of them."
- Ian MacKaye

14. She Talks To Angels - Black Crowes
"Part of getting older is realizing that you can integrate all these different areas of your life, rather than the adolescent mindset, which for me lasted a long time, which says, 'It's all or nothing.'"
Chris Robinson

15. Don’t Know Much – Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville
“You don't want people who have never had to deal with adversity - you want people who have been able to deal successfully with adversity. That's what adds to society. Those are going to be the hardest-working, best people.”
- Linda Ronstadt

16. Runnin’ Down A Dream – Tom Petty
“If you're not getting older, you're dead.”
- Tom Petty

17. Vogue - Madonna
“I'm always looking for something new: a new inspiration, a new philosophy, a new way to look at something, new talent.”
- Madonna

18. Epic – Faith No More
"Once you've been doing anything for twenty-five years people start to notice you."
- Robbie Coltraine

19. All Around the World – Lisa Stansfield
"When you're just able to distill it down to the idea and the feeling that a character is experiencing in a scene, it can become very, very razor sharp and really clean and really efficient and simple. And sometimes it takes twenty-five years to learn how to be simple."
- Kevin Spacey

20. Been Caught Stealing - Jane's Addiction
“I love being able to escape my past, even though my past was great.”
- Perry Farrell

21. Your Time Is Gonna Come – Dread Zepplin
"I shall soon be six-and-twenty. Is there anything in the future that can possibly console us for not being always twenty-five?"
- Lord Byron

22. Janie’s Got A Gun - Aerosmith
"I became a librarian at the Sainte-Genevieve Library in Paris. I made this gesture to rid myself of a certain milieu, a certain attitude, to have a clean conscience, but also to make a living. I was twenty-five. I had been told that one must make a living, and I believed it."
Marcel Duchamp

23. Friends In Low Places - Garth Brooks
“There's two dates in time
That they'll carve on your stone
And everyone knows what they mean
What's more important
Is the time that is known
In that little dash there in between
That little dash there in between”

- Garth Brooks

24. U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer
“You don't have to invent the wheel, but you might want to be the company that invents the rims.”
- MC Hammer

25. Here's Where The Story Ends - The Sundays
“Here’s Where The Story Ends for the play list, not the business. Rock on Proper Topper. Here's to your next twenty five years.”
- Joe K
