pinatubo’s dust brightens the dusk

Occasionally we are reminded that this planet of ours is an amazing, awe-inspiring thing. 21 years ago today, something happened on top of a remote, overgrown mountain in the Philippines. Magma bubbled up to the surface of the long dormant volcano, Mount Pinatubo. The explosion that followed was the second largest volcanic explosion ever recorded, 10 times larger than the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. Luckily the natives of the area were warned early enough to evacuate, but the explosion and the massive ash cloud that belched forth had worldwide repercussions, causing billions of dollars in damages and launching harmful aerosols and sulfur dioxide into the already struggling stratosphere. There is a silver lining to this cloud, however, and we mean that literally. The stratospheric dust trail added significant color to and extended the duration of our sunsets for the next 18 - 24 months. Even today it's likely that some sunsets are intensified by remnants of Pinatubo. So, here's to sunsets all over the world and the beverages we would like to imbibe while enjoying them:

1. Sunset Limited - Limbeck
Beer on the beach in Santa Cruz.

2. Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Whisky at Waterloo.

3. After Sunset - Styrofoam
Margarita in Mexico.

4. Lithium Sunset - Sting
White Russian on the Dalmatian Coast.

5. Sunset Strip - Courtney Love
Pink Champagne in the Hollywood Hills.

6. Red Sails In The Sunset - The Beatles
Guinness in Galway.

7. Talking S*** About A Pretty Sunset - Modest Mouse
Blue Hawaiian in Haleiwa.

8. Resistance Song/Sunrise, Sunset - Jill Sobule
Tequila Sunrise in Monte Carlo.

9. Indian Sunset - Elton John
Mimosa in Mombasa.

10. Sunset Breakup - Dr Rubberfunk
Bloody Mary in our backyard.
