Hats Off!: Adam’s Blacksmithin’ Dad

Several years ago, we paid tribute to our fathers in the month of June with our "Hats Off to Dad" series. We've decided to relaunch it, so do join in the fun by sending us a photo of dear ol' dad and and answering the following:

  1. Tell us about your dad. What does he do for a living? What are his hobbies? Where did he grow up? Etc., etc., etc. Feel free to extrapolate...
  2. What makes your dad the greatest? Tell us a favorite memory. Tell us about something he taught you how to do.
  3. What's the perfect day with your dad?
  4. What will you get your dad for Father's Day?

Our very own Adam kicks things off!

My father, raised in Wichita, KS, escaped to Minnesota, where he worked for the historical society as an archeologist, scuba diving on the bottom of lakes for the fur trader's sunken treasure. Basically, I like to think of him as an Indiana Jones of the late 20th Century. After changing careers to become an architect, he started to design metalwork, thus fulfilling my life dream of having a blacksmith for a father. As a child, when all of my friends received Legos for their birthdays, I was gifted a 120 pound anvil. Today, my father seems more like an original hipster, he has been wearing flannel longer than anyone on H Street, and appreciates quality over quantity. Thinking of a good Father's Day gift for this renaissance man can be very difficult, but I cannot go wrong with To Have And Have Another, a Hemingway Cocktail Companion book found at the Proper Topper. I think Indiana Jones would approve.
