Blunt magic.

April showers bring May flowers and streets filled with all manner of umbrellas. From the extra big to the mini, and including the half-broken ones in between. We prefer to welcome spring a bit more fashionably, so we never leave home without our BLUNT umbrella. Designed by an extra-tall Kiwi engineer, these gems have covered spokes (no more eye-poking!) and are constructed to withstand the harshest of conditions. The weather will never NOT be a talking point, so why not bring something fresh to the table?

To Have and Have Another

It will be fine, this gathering of people who are readers and drinkers and Library lovers. Philip Green will sign his book To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion. We will laugh. The windows on the Shaw Library will steam a little and passersby will wonder who these bright folks are, laughing and drinking and reading. Cocktails will flow. The author will stir up more. The DC Public Library will benefit and everyone will long to read a little more. And Proper Topper will have more (signed) copies of the fine book on hand for those who couldn't make it, and we will give proceeds to the DC Public Library Foundation.

Brrr ... Pow!

The biting chill in the air today says February in no uncertain terms. And yet ... the sunshine, the angle of the light, the crocuses (croci?) and daffodils popping up, all lead one to believe that spring is springing and that a bike ride would be fun. Our colleague Philissa, in fact, arrived on her bike, looking every inch the fashionable Lady Who Rides; she did mention that her toes were frozen. We suggest that any ride in this brisk weather might benefit from our new "POW" bell to alert any dawdlers to step lively.

Bookish Monday: Steal Like an Artist

On February 13, we had the pleasure of meeting Austin Kleon, author of Steal Like an Artist. He popped by the shop to find the perfect Valentine's Day gift for his lady love (this lovely little number), and from there, a Twitter friendship was born! One week later: we're carrying his delightful book and positively chomping at the bit to live life more creatively.

Francis is Back

Over twenty years ago, Christian Francis Roth debuted his first line, and the fashion industry dubbed him a prodigy. The then 21 year old Roth won the CFDA "Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent," and at one point, you could find his original designs on display at the MET's Costume Institue.

After five years, finances being what they were, Roth had to shutter his business and began designing under other Seventh Avenue brands. Fourteen years passed, and la-di-da, look who's back! Roth's new contemporary line, "Francis," launched in 2009, and part of his Spring 2013 collection just landed at Proper Topper's door. You'll find bright colors, feminine cuts, and charming details (eyelet jeans? nautical stripe linings? yes and yes.). Take a look-see:

Even animals love a pocket.

Mindful that we are now official Arbiters of Pocket Style (see WSJ & Gawker infamy below ... ), mark our words: animals enjoy pockets for flair, too. Behold Coral & Tusk's adventuresome rascals: Fox carries a camera in his pocket; Owl, binoculars; and Bear, a slingshot. Much more fun than our de rigueur lipsticks, phones, and credit cards... {Martha S. loves them, too ... see 6-page Coral & Tusk spread in this month's issue.}

It has a pocket.

Far be it from us to brag, but we've been quoted in The Wall Street Journal (ahem .. front page!), discussing Washington, DC, fashion trends. The hottest right now? Pockets, obviously. (We're sure we talked about various trends ... brocade! embroidery! peplums!  ... yet The Pocket seems to have been plucked from our pearls to illustrate Edginess, DC-Style.)

Here, "There's an age-old need, or burden, to dress in a way that's not going to raise eyebrows," says Tara McCredie, manager and buyer at Proper Topper, a boutique in Dupont Circle. So when it comes to dressy affairs, "We try to bring women along slowly, give them a little bit more edge…like this dress," she said, holding up a plain black sleeveless sheath with discreet white checks. "It has a pocket."

Dressing for the Chief.

Temperatures are dropping, but that won't deter us from putting on our fancy pants this Inaugural weekend--Proper Topper's 6th! The Washington Post styled a lovely slideshow of party-ready looks, so we thought we'd throw our hat into the proverbial ring (oh...the puns). Tell us: where and in what will you be seen when the parties begin?
