To the Women of the World

On International Women's Day, we salute a few of our favorite women-owned businesses. These companies are all committed to employing and empowering women artisans across the globe as well as here in the USA, and, happily, they also produce some of the most delightful goods we stock in the shop: Bapribap (Senegal), Victoria Road (New York and Pakistan), Raven + Lily (Austin and 8 countries), Worldfinds (Chicago, India, Indonesia, and Nepal)  and Mata Traders (Chicago, India and Nepal).

I Shall Dance All My Life

Patricia Hruby Powell's verse and Christian Robinson's illustrations create an extraordinary portrait of passionate performer and civil rights advocate Josephine Baker. Geared for young readers, this book is exhilerating and inspiring for all, giving vibrant life to this legend whose life and art were inseperable.

Love Songs

Citizens of our nation's capital tend to walk briskly, with purpose -- especially on our busy block of Connecticut Avenue. So we love it when our window display disrupts all that purposefulness and takes folks on a little flight of fancy. At the moment, it's all about hearts and flowers and sweet treats to make people smile. Take a look at Display Wizardress Karissa's artistry  ... then take a listen to DJ Joe's Valentine's Play List No. 1 (just click "read more" for spotify player).

Snowzilla!

Nature -- and city officials -- are telling us to stay close to home this weekend and enjoy this special snow show. We're following that advice, as you can see! Look for us back in the shop on Monday, and, meantime, make some snowcones, build an igloo, enjoy the winter wonderland, and, when you come inside, listen to some nice snowy tunes by the fire. Click Spotify list at the bottom of this post to hear our favorites.
